The PreditMot4Future project, promoted by Enging – Make Solutions SA and co-financed by COMPETE 2030, emerges as a strategic response to the challenges of Industry 4.0. In a context where energy efficiency, equipment reliability, and reduced operating costs are priorities, this project relies on an advanced technological approach to transform how electric motors are monitored and maintained.

The challenge of motor monitoring

Electric motors are essential for the operation of numerous industrial processes, accounting for a significant portion of global energy consumption. However, traditional monitoring methods—often manual or based on isolated systems—prove to be limited, expensive, and ineffective in preventing failures.

Unexpected failures can translate into significant losses, both in terms of energy consumption and productivity, due to unplanned downtime. This scenario highlights the need for solutions that allow for continuous, integrated, and intelligent monitoring, capable of anticipating problems and optimizing equipment operation.

According to Jorge Estima, VP of Product at Enging and Principal Investigator of the project, “PreditMot4Future was designed to respond to the challenges of Industry 4.0 through an intelligent approach to the maintenance of electric motors, combining periodic acquisition of electrical signals, resource engineering, and artificial intelligence models for early fault detection, estimation of their severity, and consequent support in planning maintenance actions.”

This approach allows not only the identification of faults before they become critical, but also provides relevant information for more efficient management of industrial assets.

Technological Development and Results Achieved

One of the project’s milestones is the development of an advanced experimental infrastructure, essential for validating the proposed solutions. As Jorge Estima points out, “among the results already achieved, the development of an experimental bench capable of introducing, in a controlled, safe, and repeatable manner, short circuits between coils stands out, creating the necessary conditions for collecting high-quality data.”

This controlled environment allows for the training and validation of artificial intelligence algorithms with high rigor, guaranteeing the reliability of the results. “The goal is to extend this experimental base to other failure modes and make the AI ​​model outputs available on the online platform to support maintenance teams in managing their equipment,” explains Gonçalo Abrantes, Head of AI at Enging and responsible for AI Development in the PreditMot4Future Project.
